Edge Grant & Façade Improvement Grant Programs

Edge Grant Program

To stimulate economic activity and to strengthen the historic character of properties within greater downtown, SDRA and the City of Savannah offer edge grants to property and business owners. The program provides funds to assist owners in enhancing the appearance of vacant lots and existing parking lots within the Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard/Montgomery Street Urban Redevelopment Area, extending from the centerline of Jones Street to 52nd Street. The grant can be used in conjunction with SDRA’s façade improvement program.

Eligibility and Criteria
Any commercial property or business owner located within the designated area is eligible to utilize the edge grant. Business owners who do not also own the property where they are located must have written approval from the property owner to proceed with this program.

SDRA will match 50 percent of applicant expenditures, up to $2,000. Eligible uses of edge grant funds include:

  • Planting trees and flowers
  • Beautifying vacant or existing parking lots
  • Installing buffers such as flowers, shrubs, or fences
  • Other improvements as approved by SDRA and the Historic Review Board

Façade Improvement Grant Program

The program provides funds to assist owners in enhancing the appearance of street-front façades within the Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard/Montgomery Street Urban Redevelopment Area, extending from the centerline of Jones Street to 52nd Street. The grant can be used in conjunction with SDRA’s edge grant program.

Eligibility and Criteria
Any commercial property or business owner located within the designated area is eligible to utilize the façade grant. Business owners who do not also own the property where they are located must have written approval from the property owner to proceed with this program.

SDRA will match 50 percent of applicant expenditures, up to $2,000. Eligible uses of facade improvement grant funds include:

  • Removing aluminum or non-historic siding
  • Repairing, restoring, or replacing cornices, windows, or original storefront features
  • Re-pointing brick and masonry
  • Repainting brick and masonry, exterior window frames, and other features
  • Adding historically compatible materials or features
  • Installing appropriate awnings and signing
  • Installing or improving guttering and downspout systems in conjunction with façade improvements made to the building
