Arena & Canal District
In November 2013, Savannah voters renewed the existing 1% Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) for a six-year period. Included in the SPLOST proposal was up to $120 million for a new arena in the Canal District. The City of Savannah subsequently formed six advisory subcommittees to discuss and make recommendations for the arena project. SDRA Board members and staff served on four of the six committees, which made their recommendations to the City Manager in November 2015.
The redevelopment plan provides an opportunity to connect west Savannah with the Historic Landmark District, create community green and recreational spaces, and implement a multi-modal transportation network to serve pedestrians, bicycles, automobiles, and rail transit.
